Growing an internship program
Team Player Production’s internship program started in 2005 with one summer intern. This was during a time, not too long ago, when there were a fraction of events you see now. Yes, there were community festivals, a few athletic events (5k, 10k, Triathlons, Marathons) a concert, a cultural or culinary event here or there… but the industry was nothing to base a career on. That of course, has now changed.
In the last decade, there has been an explosion in the events industry. The ability to set out and grow a career in this arena is now feasible. In Colorado alone, there are eight different universities and secondary education schools with programs specifically around Event Management. Team Player has met with both Colorado State University in Fort Collins and Metro State University in Denver on their academic programs. Our staff has been seen in their classrooms as guest speakers.
In 2017 we will host 12 interns across the year. They will work in the trenches with us, learning about the industry and themselves. All asking the question – is this what I want to do when I grow up? And while big festival production isn’t for everyone, this internship is a great way to get your feet wet in the industry. Of our 8 full time staff, 5 came to us through our internship program. Other TPP internship alum have ended up in conference & meeting planning, non-profit management, destination management, venue management, wedding planning, music festivals and much more. We are sure to give our interns the experience they need to move in whatever direction they choose in our growing industry.
